Cosmopolitan recently released an article in which IMG Models announced that they would no longer be hiring models based on their old standards. "We want to be an ageless, raceless, weightless agency," IMG Models Senior Vice President and Managing Director Ivan Bart told Cosmopolitan.com. "We just want to represent the best people in the industry."
In one of my classes at FIT, we recently did a case study on Image Altercations and the detrimental effects that photoshop in advertising and that the use of unnaturally skinny models can have on consumers’ body image. According to an article featured in Women’s Wear Daily, approximately 10 million people in the U.S. are affected by eating disorders (Bowers, 2010).
It’s incredible to see an agency, like IMG, that has such a strong presence in the world of fashion, making strides like this to promote a healthy body image and to hire talent that is represents a diverse range of beauty. Hopefully the agency’s bold step will help to encourage the rest of the fashion industry to follow suit!
